I started at the bottom with your movie list. Rented Volver. Very much enjoyed it, good pick. The 'story within a story within a story' style reminded me of Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources.

I haven't been ignoring you Mentok...I have simply just been thinking, and of course I have to check references and all. As I was refreshing my memory I realized what a difficult question this is...Because I noticed that I seem to choose one or the other except for those obvious cases that you previously mentioned...So I've got nothing, pathetic I know...

Better than the book is hard to say... I can make a list that gets bigger the more I think about it on films that at least are as good as the book, or perhaps changed enough to sit on its own terms.

Thanks for the movie list. Given your good taste in films, I'll now adopt this as my priority list.

Films rarely do justice to the book? Well, I guess that's right, since "rarely" can be widely interpreted.

But there are lots of big name examples I can think of, although all of them are certain to start fights with fans of the books:

- Lord of the Rings - it's a great story, but Tolkien's ponderous description makes the books almost unreadable unless you are a cult member. I was so happy the movies came out b/c they relieved me of any future temptation to re-read the books.

- 1984 - although it's a great book (one I'll happily re-read any time), the movie conveyed subtleties easily overlooked in the book.

I'm sure this list could be easily extended. Any takers for this thread: movies better than the book?

i loved the book the namesake and am curious if you thought the movie does it justice? so often i find i don't like the films made of my favorite books.
